Wine & Beer Experiences in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan’s wine and beer scene might surprise you. You wouldn’t think this steppe country has much to offer in that department, but it actually does. Vineyards like the ones around Almaty’s Enbekshikazakh region produce some really interesting local wines, nothing flashy, but enough to make you pause and appreciate what grows here. And if you’re in the city, check out Twin Peaks Brewery in Almaty. It’s one of the few places here that crafts beer with a bit of local flair, often experimenting with Kazakh ingredients like wild hops or local berries.

Visiting a winery or brewery isn’t just about tasting; many places offer tours that peek behind the scenes at their production process. And heads up: the best time for vineyard visits is late summer,September is prime for seeing the harvest in action. If you’re out near Shymkent, you might stumble upon small family producers who pour homemade stuff that isn’t in any guidebook. Just ask around, and you’ll find them.

One bit of advice? Don’t expect old-world style wine tastings or fancy wine bars like you might find in Europe, but if you’re open-minded and curious, Kazakhstan will surprise you with its honest, rugged approach to wine and beer. Pro tip: Pair local wines with some fresh kurt (dried cheese curds) – it’s a surprisingly good match!
