Description

Located just 28 kilometers from the city center, most visitors opt for a car ride to reach it, while some adventurous souls embark on a hike from the city water pipe, and a few intrepid explorers start at the Eco-point in Almarasan Gorge. The route takes you through the picturesque Almarasan Gorge, a favored gathering place for Almaty residents and city guests, where you'll often find people enjoying barbecues and socializing. Dulati Street, which runs along the gorge's bottom, boasts a variety of cafes where travelers can relax on a hot afternoon. To protect the city from potential dangers in the gorge, there are fortifications in place, including dams, tree plantations, and massive concrete blocks, all visible on the way to the lake. Along the road, you'll encounter streams, a river, and natural springs. After passing the main part of the gorge, the asphalt road winds along the foothills. Since 2008, the road has become accessible to most vehicles in warm months, provided there are no cooling system issues. BAO, though small in size, reaches impressive depths of up to 40 meters. The water remains cold as it is primarily fed by the Big Almaty River from the south. The lake formed due to seismic activity, and its water volume fluctuates throughout the year, primarily due to glacier melting intensity. In winter, the water level drops, and parts of the lake freeze. Interestingly, on sunny winter days, you can sunbathe and walk around in a swimsuit by the lake. The serpentine road continues past the observatory to a space station overlooking the lake, both of which are operational, conducting research and offering stargazing opportunities through telescopes. En route to the space station, there's a checkpoint, requiring identification documents for passage. Above the lake, three main peaks dominate the landscape: Soviets Peak (4,317 m) to the southeast, Ozerny Peak (4,110 m) to the south, and Tourist Peak (3,954 m) to the southwest. Visitors to the Research Science station should be prepared for cold weather, even in summer when snow is not uncommon, and the mountain weather can be unpredictable. Beyond the lake trip, Outfitter KZ provides an option to ascend Big Almaty Peak, a rewarding addition to a visitor's itinerary, offering both an informative lake visit and the conquest of one of Zailisky Alatau's summits.'
