Description
This two-day tour from Khiva explores the environmental and cultural history of the Aral Sea region and its surroundings, suitable for travelers interested in history and nature.
Day 1: Your driver will pick you up early from your hotel in Khiva and transfer you 380 km to Muynak, a journey of about 6 hours with a lunch break. In Muynak, visit the Cemetery of Ships, where abandoned vessels from the 1980s remain as reminders of the Aral Sea disaster.
Next, explore the Aral Sea Museum and Regional History Museum, including a documentary about Muynak and the environmental crisis. Afterward, transfer to a 4x4 Toyota Prado or Land Cruiser for a 150 km, approximately 3-hour off-road journey to the Aral Sea, stopping at the Ustyurt Plateau and canyons.
Visit the Kurgancha-Kala Fortress, built in the 13th century as an outpost for Silk Road caravans. The day ends with an overnight stay at a yurt camp near the Aral Sea, where you will have dinner inside a traditional Karakalpak yurt.
Day 2: After breakfast, transfer back to Muynak, then visit the Mizdakhan necropolis, an ancient sacred complex with mausoleums dating from IV-II BC to XIII-XVI AD.
Next, explore Giaur-Kala, a fortified city from the Zoroastrian era (IV-III BC), once an important Silk Road settlement. The tour concludes with transfer to your desired drop-off point: hotel, Nukus Airport, Khiva, or Urgench.
