Experience the ultimate Almaty morning routine with a revitalizing hike (level: easy) through the stunning Almaty mountains. Designed for travelers, digital nomads, and active explorers, this experience gives you a genuine taste of the majestic Tien Shan mountains without the exhaustion of a full-day, 15-hour bus tour.
You won't just be walking a trail; you will be exploring with a true Almaty local. Your guide is a native who has studied and lived in the United States and in Sweden, offering the perfect bridge between authentic Kazakh culture and international hospitality. Throughout the morning, you will hear fascinating stories about the region's history, Soviet-era alpine architecture, and modern life in Kazakhstan, all tailored to resonate with global travelers. The journey begins from the legendary Medeu, famous for being the highest outdoor skating rink in the world. From the massive mudflow dam, we embark on a moderately paced, breathtaking hike up into the picturesque Gorelnik Gorge. As we walk past towering pine forests and cross the iconic Arman-Köpir suspension bridge, your guide will share local mountain lore and point out hidden details along the trail.
After about 45 to 60 minutes of hiking, we reach our destination: the Gorelnik Visit Center. Here, you get to experience a true local wellness secret by soaking in the open-air radon thermal pools. Relax your muscles in the warm mineral water while surrounded by crisp mountain air and dramatic peaks. (Please note: Guests must bring their own swimsuit and quick-dry towel if you plan on getting into the thermal springs).
Once rejuvenated from the thermal soak, we will head to the legendary Apa Katya mountain café, nestled right next to the trail. It is the perfect spot to warm up and enjoy an authentic alpine breakfast. Sit on the panoramic terrace, try the traditional mountain tea, fresh syrniki (cottage cheese pancakes), or delicious oatmeal porridge (food and drink at your own expense), and enjoy great conversation.
By late morning, we begin our casual descent back to Medeu. You get a revitalizing workout, a cultural deep-dive, and a thermal soak - all before noon, leaving your entire afternoon completely free to explore the rest of Almaty!
