Estabelecido em 1934, o Teatro Acadêmico de Ópera e Balé Cazaque de Abai é o orgulho da cultura musical nacional. O edifício do teatro, reconstruído e renovado várias vezes ao longo de sua história, é um exemplo marcante da arquitetura de Almaty. O teatro é um teatro de repertório, contando com mais de 40 produções cazaques e ocidentais durante uma única temporada, incluindo Romeu e Julieta, Giselle e O Cisne, Turandot, La Traviata e Aida. Os artistas são principalmente dos ballets e companhias de ópera regulares do teatro, com performances ocasionais de convidados.
