Opggericht in 1934, is het Abai Kazakh Academic Opera en Ballet Theater de trots van de nationale muzikale cultuur. Het gebouw van het theater, meerdere malen herbouwd en gerenoveerd gedurende zijn geschiedenis, is een mijlpaal voorbeeld van architectuur in Almaty. Het theater is een repertoires theater, met meer dan 40 Kazachse en westerse producties in een enkel seizoen, waaronder Romeo & Julia, Giselle en Zwaan, Turandot, La Traviata en Aida. De artiesten zijn voornamelijk afkomstig uit het reguliere ballet en opera gezelschap van het theater, met af en toe gastoptredens.
