THE GUNS&ROSES PUB-GRILLE
Warning! Party Zone!
Anybody averse to the following should stay away from this pub...
The Guns & Roses atmosphere is legendary and people from all over the world gather together every night of the week for drinking and dancing into the early hours. The amply-sized dance floor and variety of seating areas mean that there is room for many people to let their hair down after work, not least considering that the clientele is made up to an extent of foreign travellers and people on working trips to the business capital of the country, Almaty.
Although open seven days a week, weekend is when the tempo picks up with parties on Fridays and Saturdays, as well as public holidays, fit for any New Year. The layout allows relative privacy in Irish style enclaves while there are also open seating areas next to the dance floor. Equally as many people can be found on the outdoor terrace during the summer months and all year round the fun continues apace inside where several hundred people bring energy and life to some of the best parties in the whole region.
The bar, fitted up in a blend of Irish, English and American style, is next to the Kazakhstan Hotel and effectively part of the same complex although guests are by no means all staying in the hotel itself, and the hotel is also proud of its proximity to two other popular destinations, The Noodles and The Cosmopolitan Lounge Bar.
The resident singers Johnny, Branko and their backing group are competent musicians playing famous western hits known to everybody, the most popular of which is probably their note-perfect cover of Final Countdown by the Scandinavian group, Europe. Interestingly, both singers actually hail from Europe although are by now long since settled in Almaty where thousands have come to see them perform live for many years. It's easy to see why. Guns & Roses parties do not depend solely on their music, but the fun factor. Put it this way, they know how to entertain.
Great food and drinks
With upwards of probably 30 different nationalities in the pub every weekend, it follows that there are a range of different preferences to cater for. The drinks range from lagers of different origin to cocktails and spirits some of which are quality brands known across the world. And while it isn't a surprise to find Efes or Jack Daniels in a place such as this, you may still be impressed with the other choices available alongside them.
Guns & Roses calls itself a grill pub and the menu is every bit the real deal. Maybe not the first port of call for vegetarians but considering their relative absence in this region the prevalence of grilled meats is more than enough to keep most people appetised. This is not to say it's all meat, but the range of dishes has a focus on steak, and very well cooked steak at that, considering the expert kitchen team and their years of experience catering to pub crowds.
In spite of the number of people packing the bar at weekends, there is still room for a pool table round the corner. It's also free, although be prepared to queue if you want a game. If you're not into playing, you can still keep up with major sporting events as the manager has a commitment to screening football and other sports regularly. However this is not a sports café by design, the PA system is dedicated to matches such as Champions League finals and the like but under normal circumstances given to the music, either that of the live bands or the dance tracks played during interludes.
The main bar serving area is small but accessible, for English or Irish guests who prefer to get a pint (yes, a pint) from the bar staff directly. But knowing that this would not be practical for everybody, waiting staff are numerous, attentive and required to speak English to get a job in the bar in the first place. It is also possible to settle the bill on purchase or at the end of the night. Credit card payment is an option.
Guns & Roses is a destination for many on trips to the city and a first port of call for most of those coming back. The balance is just right and in certain ways this pub is representative of Almaty - a place of fun for everybody, wherever you come from.
So, you have been warned, the complete party, which is why everybody comes in and stays in until 03:00 when last orders are taken.
