Perustettu vuonna 1934, Abai Kazakhin Akateeminen Ooppera- ja Balettiteatteri on kansallisen musiikillisen kulttuurin ylpeys. Teatterin rakennus, joka on uudistettu ja remontoitu useita kertoja historiansa aikana, on merkittävä esimerkki Almatyn arkkitehtuurista. Teatteri on repertuaariteatteri, joka esittää yli 40 kazakstanilaisia ja länsimaisia tuotantoja yhden kauden aikana, mukaan lukien Romeo & Julia, Giselle ja Joutsen, Turandot, La Traviata ja Aida.
