Description

4-Day Grand Almaty Trekking — Explore the Heart of the Trans-Ili Alatau Mountains The Grand Almaty Trekking is one of the most scenic multi-day hiking adventures in southern Kazakhstan. This 4-day circular route takes you deep into the Trans-Ili Alatau range, part of the majestic Tien Shan Mountains, offering a perfect mix of alpine landscapes, mountain passes, and turquoise glacial lakes. Starting just outside Almaty, the trail winds through conifer forests, wildflower meadows, and rocky ridgelines with breathtaking panoramic views. Along the way, trekkers experience the best of the region’s natural diversity — from peaceful valleys and fast-flowing rivers to the dramatic views of Big Almaty Lake and surrounding peaks rising above 4,000 meters. Each day of the trek reveals something new: Day 1: Ride the cable car to Talgar Pass (3200 m), then descend into the Left Talgar Gorge. Gradual ascent through alpine meadows to Krasnaya Polyana, where we set up the first camp. Day 2: Continue climbing the scenic gorge, crossing stone moraines toward the Turist Glacier. Camp on grassy slopes near the glacier, surrounded by high peaks. Day 3: Ascend Turist Pass (3960 m) via a rocky and snowy trail with panoramic glacier views. Descend into Kyzyl-Sai Gorge and camp near the river confluence. Day 4: Descend toward Big Almaty Lake, completing the loop with stunning mountain and lake views. The route is designed for experienced hikers with good physical preparation and offers ideal conditions for acclimatization before high-altitude expeditions, such as climbs to peaks like Sovetov or even Khan Tengri. Nights are spent in tents under starry skies, with pure mountain air and silence all around — a true escape into nature. This trek is more than just a hike — it’s an immersion into Kazakhstan’s alpine wilderness, combining adventure, culture, and connection with nature. Whether you’re a passionate mountaineer or an outdoor traveler seeking an authentic experience near Almaty, the Grand Almaty Trekking is one of the most rewarding multi-day hikes in Central Asia.
